    Both the St Joseph's Church in Temuka and the St Mary's Church in Pleasant Point are currently unable to be used.

    The St Joseph's Church in Temuka has had ongoing engineering assessments, particularly after the 22 February Christchurch earthquake, with engineers regularly monitoring the building. Following a recent review, the building was considered to be earthquake prone. Work will begin immediately to remove the spire from the church to lessen the risk of it falling. more»

    Msgr Tom Power, the much loved parish priest of St. Peter's Parish in Beckenham has passed away on the morning of 28th June, aged 92 after a very short period of illness.

    Msgr Tom (or Fr Tom as he was most known by) was the oldest parish priest in New Zealand. He was ordained in 1953 and was parish priest of St Peter's for the past 25 years. One of the notable attributes of Fr Tom was that he was up to date with technology, emailing his homily to those on his email circulation list on a weekly basis. more»

    A preliminary engineering assessment of St Mary's Church in Sewell Street, Hokitika has revealed that the building is earthquake prone. Whilst engineering solutions are assessed the church is unable to be used.

    St Mary's School hall has been suggested by engineers as a suitable alternative for the Parish in the interim. The parish and school are working together to enable this to happen. more»

    A labour of love and high standards in radio production have won Sounds Catholic the prestigious 2012 NZ Radio Industry Award for best spoken programme in the Community and Access category. The magazine style weekly programme is produced and hosted by Ken Joblin of the Catholic Tertiary Chaplaincy, and can be heard Sundays at Noon, repeated at 10pm and via online podcast.

    The winning episode featured highlights from a year of challenges faced by the Christchurch Diocese. At times the sound of an aftershock can be heard during a recording. more»
